What better way is there to spend the last few months of 2017 than messing about with tech! Here's our pick of the great STEM activities for kids, the coolest coding workshops for teens and the awesome tech events for adults.
Get In The Game Careers Talks 13:00-17:00, 8th November (Free)
If you're thinking about getting into games development, this event by Grads in Games will be an ideal introduction. A series of talks aimed at students will discuss topics like careers in games advice, how to secure your first games industry role, CV, interview and game demo tips, and what knowledge you'll need to get going in this industry. Awesome for anyone considering a career in games development.
Tiny Sparks 10:00-10:45, 8th November (£3.50 a child)
This is a great little event for your tiniest STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) enthusiasts. This fortnightly event at the Discovery Museum is for 2-4 year olds, and introduces children to some awesome scientific discoveries, as well as teaching them about some great scientists. A little engineering and inventing, a bit of operating and a lot of storytelling. Tiny Sparks is sure to get your little ones inspired.
Coder Dojo 11:00-1:00, 18th November (Free)
The monthly Coder Dojo is a great event for 8-17 year olds. This club is hosted by volunteers at the Life Centre in Newcastle, and is ideal to introduce your kids to programming or hone their skills if they're a little more advanced. Bring along your own laptop and power cable (although if you need to borrow one, you can get in touch). This event is on the third Saturday of every month, with additional events at various locations around Tyne and Wear.
York Raspberry Jam 17:15-19:15, 27th November (Free)
This workshop is designed to help adults and children get to grips with a Raspberry Pi! A team from York Maker Hub will take you through setting up your Raspberry Pi, get it plugged in and operating, and then try it out with the apps that your little ones are messing about with. A great little introduction to electronics and programming - no previous knowledge required!
Code Club Volunteer Training Session 17:00 - 19:00, 5th December (Free)
We're big believers in Code Club (find out what happened when we visited one here!) and at Inspire2Learn in Teeside they're training up adults who want to get involved - whether you want to be a volunteer, a club host, or you're just curious! You don't need to be a coding whizz - this event is ideal for anyone new to coding. Inspire2Learn run events and workshops like this all the time, so keep an eye out for more of the same.
